Buying jewellery as a gift, without knowing their size

Rings are the hard part. Almost everything else is more forgiving than people expect.

The usual worry about gifting jewellery is getting it wrong in a way that cannot be undone. In practice only one category is genuinely size-dependent, and there are ways around even that.

Start with what does not need a size

Earrings fit everyone. So do most pendants, and bracelets with an adjustable closure. If you are buying for someone whose measurements you do not know and cannot ask about without ruining the surprise, these are the safe ground — and they are not a compromise, they are simply the larger part of what we make.

If it has to be a ring

Borrow one they already wear and measure its inner diameter, or take it to any jeweller who will size it in a minute. Failing that, buy something else and let them choose the ring with you afterwards. A ring that does not fit sits in a drawer, which is a worse outcome than a slightly less surprising one.

Match the collection to the person

Someone who wears the same two pieces daily wants EVERYDAY EVARA, not a ceremonial set. Someone with a wedding season ahead of them wants AABHAR. Buying up in formality is the most common mistake — the grander piece is flattering to give and harder to wear.

How it arrives

If it is still wrong
